ABOUT THE EXHIBITION

Computer games have become an integral part of our everyday culture. The game industry is now the branch of the culture industry with the highest turnover. Artists from a wide variety of disciplines are contributing to the creation of ever more complex digital worlds. It is conceivable that by focusing on social, economic and aesthetic issues connected with computer games that games can emerge as a new form of art, possessing strong artistic content. The exhibition for Seoul will highlight the next generation of game design with apps for tablets from international body of designers. The exhibition will be set in an ambient scenography and offer a peek into the play of tomorrow in terms of design, platforms, technology and storytelling, providing visitors with a unique space to enjoy this new genre of art.

SWISS ART GAME WORKS

OKO

Nadezda Suvorova (CHE)

OKO is a puzzle video game. The goal is to reconstruct an image by stopping rotating circles cut out from this image. For each level, the animated pieces draw increasingly complex patterns. The challenge is to be attentive to image juxtapositions in order to stop the circles movement at the right moment. OKO is a mesmerizing journey around our planet accomplished by navigating images from the NASA database.

LiquidSketch

Tobias Neukom (CHE)

LiquidSketch is a puzzle game based entirely on simulated water. What makes it different from other such games is the simulation itself. It uses a different approach than most other games that trades some flexibility for very smooth and detailed fluid motion and realistic physics. The other distinguishing feature is that the water is colored and it mixes realistically. This allows you to see the motion inside the water in a visually nice way and is also used as a game play element. The Puzzles are more based on physical properties of water than on Rube Goldberg machine scenarios.

DREI

Etter Studio & Mario Rickenbach (CHE)

The game features a hidden multiplayer system that connects all players of Drei, across the world and in real-time. This mechanic confronts the player suddenly with other players, which might seem disruptive at first. But over time, the strangers become collaborators without whom the increasingly difficult levels cannot be solved. To allow players from all corners of the world to communicate to each other, the team of Drei invented a universal communication system. This system instantly translates simple expressions across 18 different languages.

SONA

Ruslan Gaynutdinov (CHE)

The project investigates ways sound can be visualized and how the spectator can be immersed in simple sound based geometric compositions. Sona is an experimental game for the iPad inspired by the classic “Simon game”. The universe is composed of enigmatic sound paintings that the spectator must solve through simple interactions. The game is played with headphones to focus attention on the sound. By connecting different elements in the game, networks are formed which simultaneously produce sounds. Networks can be broken, other nodes connected, each time dramatically changing the music composition.

Danse Macabre

Curious Minds (CHE) + Guests (INT)'

The project “Meet the Music” gives living composers a unique opportunity to create and present their work. The project takes a step forward by offering composers something more than a just stage; it offers them a new way to come in contact with music lovers. This is accomplished by making collection of short music works (Danse Macabre) available by placing them into virtual space using Augmented Reality techniques. Here, semi silhouette images of the composers or performers are spread out in public space using GPS coordinates to place then. Using a mobile phone and a downloadable applications, each of the silhouette images can be seen through a the mobile device when at the geographic location where one of the silhouettes has been placed. Clicking on the image triggers an animation and the music begins to play.

Gravity Lander

Büro Destruct (CHE)

Help three Cosmonauts on their mission to master gravity and debris cluttering the landing bases. Beware of obstacles like bumpers, wheels, lifts, explosives, trampolines and debris on your flight down to the base. Use boosts and tilt your device for a new action experience. Acrobatic steering skills and a healthy portion of luck will help you to succeed the 100 missions. Best described as a seriously addictive and intuitive physics gameplay having 100 missions range from training, easy, casual, tricky to hard. The retro space graphics are done by swiss design studio Büro Destruct and thenCosmic analog synthesizer soundtrack by Baldu

Foxx Keedz

Yulia Garcia Skrebneva (CHE)

Foxx Keedz is a serious strategy puzzle game. You play the supervisor of a Chinese phone company. Your mission is to mentor young workers and to maximize production. Displays of exhaustion, sadness, shouting or madness are prohibited. Scroll horizontally the three assembly lines to spot misbehaviours and call the workers back to order using various touch gestures.

Magnetics

Fabien Duperrex (CHE)

Magnetics is a 2D strategy puzzle game. The goal is to destroy “magnetic” tokens by hitting them with another token of the same type launched from a base revolving around the central area. There are three types of tokens with different shapes and properties: speed, gravity and magnetism. When a projectile misses the target, it remains in play, making the task more complex. Magnetics’ minimalist design enhances the gameplay, which was created specifically for mobile displays.

KOREAN ART GAME WORKS

TypeDrawing

Han Sol Hun (KOR)

TypeDrawing is a cute app that lets you create cool drawings using text. This is ASCII art taken to fun extremes.Type Drawing lets you set your background as either yellow or white lined paper or—in this case—a photo. The app lets you type in a word or phrase, adjust your font and size, and start drawing, repeating that phrase over and over. Type Drawing is packed with niceties. You can set your background to be photorealistic yellow or white lined paper, solid colors, or a photo. Beyond choosing your font, “pen” size, and a (grayscale) shade, you can also use the very clever “size by speed” setting, which increases the size of the text you’re drawing with as you draw faster. The app sports many levels of undo, although my poor art skills could probably benefit from a few more. When you’re finished creating your masterpiece, you can save it to your iPhone’s photo album.

ArtTree

Han Sol Hun (KOR)

Technically speaking, Artree is a tree-generator. With a tap of your finger, Artree's sophisticated generative algorithm begins growing an amazingly beautiful living organism. Every tree has its own unique shape and life. No two trees are alike. Just relax, sit back and watch them coming through. Our life and nature are filled with a number of coincidences, and sometimes it makes breathtakingly beautiful moments. Clear your mind with this art & zen app. It is really relaxing, peaceful and original. You can save the Artree image as 1136x1136, which is a perfect size for iPhone wallpapers. Make unique and novel images for wallpapers, web designs, page layouts, or illustrations with Artree.

OTHER ART GAME WORKS

Mountain

David O'Reilly (INT)

Mountain, a self-described "god simulator," provides an approach more in line with deism—the belief that, while there is a god, he’s probably not too interested in us. After the creation of the universe, deists argue that god simply allows life to exist and does not intervene in earthly affairs. That makes us the inhabitants of a theological snowglobe, if you will. During a quick introduction, you are prompted to respond to a series of questions or statements with a simple sketch, such as “What is sadness?” or “Your mother.” What relationship there is between your new hunk of rock and the scribbles you just made is unclear, but after this, your "body"—the mountain—is generated.

Patatap

Jono Brandel(USA)

Patatap is a portable animation and sound kit. With the touch of a finger create melodies charged with moving shapes. The motivation behind Patatap is to introduce the medium of Visual Music to a broad audience. Artists working in this field vary in discipline but many aim to express the broader condition of Synesthesia, in which stimulation of one sensory input leads to automatic experiences in another. The history behind the aesthetic expression of synesthesia arose from the paintings of Piet Mondrian and Wassily Kandinsky and the early videos of Viking Eggeling and Norman McLaren, to the contemporary animations of Oskar Fischinger and softwares of C.E.B. Reas. Patatap takes elements from visionaries painters and filmmakers such as Mondrian, Kandinsky, Fischinger etc. and aims to present this concept in a direct way.

Orphion

Bastus Trump (USA)

Orphion is a musical instrument with a unique sound between string instrument and percussion. Everyone can play expressive, wonderful sounds and easy or virtuosic melodies on it just by moving fingers on virtual pads. With Orphion, the user can play polyphonic music very expressively, drum crazy drumming, Create soundscapes and melodies, or just dream and relax. With its vast sets of articulations from soft to plucked to hardly slapped, its 14 transposable pad-layouts, the record and share function, Orphion extend your ways of expression as a percussionist, guitarist, pianist or other musician.; and with its recird and share function, sharing via EMail, SoundCloud or AudioCopy is easy.

Bubble Harp

Scott Sona (INT)

Bubble Harp draws bubbles around your fingertips, recording and replaying your movements while creating music based on the animated forms. It’s a combination of drawing, animation, music, art, geometry, and games. Bubble Harp was first released as a work of interactive art by Scott Sona Snibbe that was at first only available in galleries and museums. Now it’s available as an iPhone and iPad application that also is able to create generative music. Bubble Harp was built fwith the help of openFrameworks, and uses the Triangle library by Jonathan Shewchuk.

Got Heat

Anthony Weems (USA)

This heat simulator senses the amount of time that your finger is on the screen and creates a simulated heat map on the screen. It is great for creating one-of-a-kind backgrounds or learning about heat diffusion.

Tripolar

Scott Sona Snibbe (USA)

Commissioned by the Whitney Museum of American Art, Tripolar animates the tangled, abstract, and ever-changing forms a pendulum makes as it swings over a magnetic base. The drawings it creates, reminiscent of 1950s abstraction, are chaotic systems in which minute changes to the start position produce large changes in the pendulum’s path.To explore the boundary between a software artist’s work and the interactive creations made with it, the iOS version of Tripolar allows you to move, add, and remove magnets to create an infinite array of configurations besides Tripolar’s original well-known configuration of three symmetric magnets.

Thicket

Joshue Ott(USA)

Thicket is an audiovisual playground that allows anyone to create beautiful sounds and pictures from simple finger touches. For users of all ages, this generative art and sound app immerses you in song-like audiovisual pieces called modes. When “playing” a mode, you both react to and create the music and graphics that you experience. Each mode is its own art generator, interactive toy, musical instrument, even performance tool depending on how you use it. And with new modes to be developed and released every few months, Thicket functions an expandable platform in the exciting new genre of handheld interactive art.

SenseFrame

Shunichi Kasahara (JAP)

SenseFrame small version is a sound reactive visual application for iPhone and iPod Touch. The visual screen reacts with sound sensitively, and makes beautiful visual changes. Launch SenseFrame, and display somewhere around you. Sound of closing door, moving mouse, putting glass, music you are listening to, conversation, and any of you behavior or environment around you, SenseFrame reacts to it. Enhance your daily life with this application.

Björk: Solstice

Max Weisel (INT)

At the center of this app is a sun from which user pulls rays of light to form a circular harp of strings plucked by colorful orbiting planets; tilt the device and the orbital planes turn into branches of three-dimesional Christmas tree, the stars becoming snowflakes. In Solstice, Björk plays the "Solstice" song with a specially commissioned pendulum-harp which embodies the idea of grativity.

Poly Fauna

Radiohead, Nigel Godrich, Stanley Donwood and Universal Everything (INT)

Commissioned as a free, exploratory audiovisual app, born out of Radiohead’s The King of Limbs sessions and the sketchbooks of Stanley Donwood. Set to a lunar calendar, the mysterious, immersive app is brought to life through touch and offers a unique and different set of experiences and encounters each time it’s used. Inviting the user into an immersive, expansive world of primitive life, weather, sunsets, mountains and forests, Polyfauna comes from an interest in early computer life-experiments and the imagined creatures of our subconscious. It is inspired by everything from the atmospheric landscape paintings of JW Turner and Peter Doig, to the computational life forms of Karl Sims.

Bloom

Brian Eno (INT), Peter Chilvers(Int)

Developed by ambient pioneer Brian Eno and musician / software designer Peter Chilvers, Bloom explores uncharted territory in the realm of applications for iPhone and iPod touch, part composition and part artwork, Bloom’s innovative controls allow anyone to create elaborate patterns and unique melodies by simply tapping the screen. A generative music player takes over when Bloom is left idle, creating an infinite selection of compositions and their accompanying visualizations.
